Abstract:
The educationists, academicians and administrators should concern the past, present and future scenario to transform and integrate the various components of higher education to meet the change and challenge of inclusive growth of the individuals, institutions, societies and nations. In the fast paced knowledge based societies of today, the institutions of higher learning are the essential components of cultural, socio-economic and environmentally sustainable development.
Objectives of the present paper are:
1. To reorient the existing higher education programmes in fostering holistic development through HEPR (Higher Education Process Re-Engineering).
2. And to study the need and modalities towards shift from teacher centric teaching to student centric learning for academic excellence.

Society's future leaders and decision makers are educated in IHE. If these young people are expected to lead all sectors of society (e.g., research, government, medicine, agriculture, forestry, law, business, industry, engineering, education, architecture, and arts) in a world striving toward sustainability, then we must reorient university curriculums to include the many and complex facets of sustainability.
Education process re-engineering is a concept developed and evolved from various reengineering process of the pastneeded in all components of higher education i.e. curriculum development, teaching learning process, assessment and evaluation and research etc. The present paper focuses on teaching learning process as the complete learning experience of a learner is centered round it. As such it is needed to emphasize that innovation in teaching methodology, a shift from teacher centric teaching to student centric teaching is the need of the hour.
To face the challenges of Higher education, there is a need to create a learning society on the four pillars of Education i.e., learning to know; learning to do; learning to live together; and learning to be. Explosion of knowledge, wide access to information and knowledge resources through world-wide-web and advancement in communication technologies have made large-scale sharing of information and knowledge easy and complex. Courses and delivery methodologies need to be redesigned to sustain the students’ interest while ensuring high quality learning outcomes.
Information Technology has basically been used in two different avenues in Education. One is Communication and Connectivity and other is Education Process Reengineering. Information technology enables sophisticated product development, better knowledge transaction, and implementation of reliable techniques for the control of higher education and helps the higher education to promote sustainable development.

A study was carried out on teachers and learners regarding their expectations and experiences in higher education institutions and what is their vision for future. The results were integrated to redesigning and reorienting the existing teaching learning process of higher education programmes and measures are suggested in fostering holistic development through HEPR (Higher Education Process Re-Engineering).
