Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in Digital storytelling tools (DSTT) which integrated storytelling strategy with multimedia, mainly through online or offline environments. The multimedia is used to create the scene but student still has to write the narrative about the scene. It can be used as visual scaffolding to support students in writing stories. The purpose of this study is to investigate what are the motivational requirements for children (9-12 years old) to write Arabic e-stories that can be used as a baseline to be able to develop an instrument that supports teachers in identifying appropriate DST tools that have those motivational requirements. Educational and technical requirements are generated and combined to form the framework. Based on the result from 13 expert reviews and using a survey sample that collected from 244 different knowledge workers with children in Saudi Arabia, we found that all educational and technical requirements in proposed framework are deemed statistically significant except one: sex segregation. This research presents a novel framework that identifies important motivational requirements (educational and technical) for motivating child to write e-stories. It can also be used as a baseline to be able to develop an instrument that supports teachers in assessing appropriate DSTT and guide Human-Computer interaction designers.
