ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ACADEMIC EDITING: GOVERNANCE, AUTHORSHIP AND INTEGRITY IN SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION

Abstract:
Generative artificial intelligence tools are increasingly integrated into academic writing and editing processes. These systems support drafting, rewriting, translation, summarisation, stylistic refinement and structural reorganisation of texts. While such technologies enhance efficiency and accessibility, they also challenge established understandings of authorship, intellectual contribution and editorial responsibility within scholarly communication.
This paper analyses artificial intelligence-assisted academic editing from a governance perspective. Rather than framing artificial intelligence as inherently problematic or inherently beneficial, the study conceptualises its integration as a structural transformation in the architecture of scholarly production. The central concern is not technological use per se, but the opacity of algorithmic mediation and its implications for accountability, transparency and integrity.
The analysis distinguishes between instrumental linguistic assistance and substantive intellectual substitution. Three structural risk dimensions are identified: authorship dilution, opacity of algorithmic intervention, and erosion of editorial oversight within peer review and publication workflows. In contexts where generative systems meaningfully shape argumentation or conceptual structure, undisclosed use may compromise the integrity of scholarly attribution and weaken trust in academic outputs.
To address these challenges, the paper proposes a governance model grounded in mandatory disclosure of artificial intelligence use in manuscript preparation, adaptation of editorial policies, reviewer training focused on algorithmic mediation, and proportional regulatory responses to inappropriate substitution. The model integrates transparency and human oversight as core principles, positioning artificial intelligence governance as part of broader research integrity frameworks.
By situating academic editing within institutional governance rather than individual ethics alone, the study contributes to debates on intellectual property, editorial accountability and responsible innovation in higher education. It argues that structured integration of artificial intelligence is essential to sustain academic credibility in digitally mediated scholarly environments.Keywords:
