Abstract:
Open Educational Resources (OERs) offer a powerful tool to tackle social justice issues in education. By promoting accessibility and inclusivity, OERs can empower learners and break down barriers to higher education. This research investigates how the National Enrichment Programme in Wales uses OERs to cultivate a more equitable learning environment within the Welsh Further Education system. The National Enrichment Programme Enhanced leverages OERs to enhance the educational experience of Further Education learners, particularly those aiming to transition to Higher Education or the job market. This study investigates student experiences with OERs, exploring how these resources contribute to widening participation and a more just and equitable educational landscape. The research examines the experiences of 145 college students through a survey, addressing questions about usability, usefulness, perceived benefits, and areas for improvement. Findings reveal generally positive experiences, highlighting its potential to empower learners and support academic development. However, the study also identifies areas for improvement, such as the need for more targeted support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The research emphasises the importance of moving beyond simply offering OERs and creating a supportive learning environment. By acknowledging learner diversity and implementing targeted support strategies, OER programs can maximize their potential to empower students and create a truly just and equitable educational landscape. This aligns with the ongoing discussion on OERs as a force for social justice in education, promoting accessible, inclusive, and empowering learning resources for all.
