Abstract:
The aim of this article is to show that problem solving can help increase the quality of mathematics teaching in high school. The aim of teaching mathematics is not only for students to acquire the necessary knowledge imposed on them by school curricula, but also to acquire other skills that can be useful to them in their studies and professional practice. Modern researches show that problem solving in maths classes helps students to be independent, improves their school competencies and relationship to mathematics. Problem solving belongs to the heuristic approaches to teaching, where students participate in the teaching process, learn independence in discovering new knowledge and build an active approach to mathematics. This article shows how students can use heuristic solving strategies to solve mathematical problems, how they can solve problems using these strategies themselves, how they can use scientific research approaches to solve problems. One strategy that uses research approaches to solve problems is the strategy of systematic experimentation. The application part of the article describes examples of problem solving using systematic experimentation. The solution procedures are supplemented by mathematical proofs that will help students verify the accuracy of their procedure and the chosen solution. Keywords:
