Abstract:
This work covers the adaptation of one of the teaching practices of the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry on quantitative analysis to become a part of a video game. In this module, which belongs to the second year of the Chemistry degree at the University of Valencia, students are introduced to both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
As an example, the quantification of amoxicillin in pharmaceutical products is carried out in non-aqueous media. This practice has been adapted to a video game format, and it has been programmed to provide different results every time the students take it. In this way, undergraduates can repeat the process as many times as desired and review the calculation steps. Additionally, as a part of the teaching process, waste management is also addressed. Hence, once the practice is finished, the final part of the practice allows to classify the residues into the different groups, in order to be properly disposed of. The objective of this specific part is to make the students get comfortable with the concept of waste reduction and management, while identifying the different waste groups, and also gaining awareness of the waste volume which is generated, in order to minimize it.
