Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to determine the challenges of Pre –service training of teachers in College of education in Nigeria. The teachers on graduation operate at the basic level of education in the country. The institutions have a governing body, National Commission for Colleges of Education - N C.C.E.. This body oversees academic activities. N.C.C.E prepares the minimum standards (policies and or regulations for running the institutions) through which it controls and directs the training of teachers at Nigeria Certificate in Education - NCE level. Teacher education goals include among others to produce highly motivated, conscientious and efficient classroom teachers, who will enhance commitment to national goals who are professionally equipped and adaptable to changing situations. The teacher is germane in the education system as he rotates the hub of the system. Though the goals are laudable teacher education in colleges of education, is beset by challenges. These problems may include performance of students and poor quality teaching and resources. This paper will address the challenges using Federal College of Education Eha - Amufu as a case study. The study will adopt questionnaire instruments for Lecturers and students, it will also observed facilities and primary source documents consulted to determine students’ admission and performance in the NCE for 3 consecutive years, etc. the data will be analyzed using SPSS. The results will help to determine challenges and recommendations to help improve Pre - service training of teachers in nigeria.
