Abstract:
In my paper I will describe the teaching spelling and talent management at the Institution of Hungarian Linguistics and Literary Science. The Institute's main tasks are educational. The Department's core mission is to provide teacher training in Hungarian language and literature in Slovakia.

The paper also describes the linguistic research carried out at the institute. The institute's core mission is to carry out research in two fields: language and literature. In the early years, the main areas of linguistic research were onomastics and, to a lesser extent, dialectology, descriptive grammar and stylistics. One of the proofs of the success of the wide-ranging research in language and literature studies is the rich publication activity, which is marked by numerous works, monographs, university textbooks, volumes of studies, which are also noted in international scholarship. I think it is important to report on these innovation results too.

At the Institute, the teaching of spelling is a compulsory subject in all study programmes. The issue of teaching spelling needs increased support in Hungarian secondary schools in Slovakia, but also in higher education, so we are paying special attention to it. As the students of the Institute of Hungarian Linguistics and Literary Science are socialised in a dialect environment, we need to examine the relationship between spelling teaching and the dialect background. My conclusions were drawn from the results of previous studies and from pencil answers to the first-year teacher, interpreter and mediator students of the 2022/2023 academic year, as well as from the answers to the task sheets and spelling exercises used in the house competition of the Spelling Competition of Béla J. Nagy. In my paper I will also present the results of this research. The Slovak (regional) round of the Spelling Competition of József Implom Secondary School is organized yearly in the winter term by the Institute of Hungarian Linguistics and Literary Science of the Faculty of Central European Studies of the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra. Through the competition we keep in touch with high schools and other universities in Slovakia, as we were the first university in Slovakia to organise the competition.

A few years ago, we launched a talent management and competence development programme based on class assignments. Students are involved from the very beginning of their studies in the organisation of events such as scientific conferences, academic and artistic competitions, which give them the experience they will need for their future careers. In the paper I will also point out the importance of this. This is particularly important for our Hungarian students, who need to be more versatile than their colleagues, as they are responsible for organising festive programmes, recitation competitions, language and literature contests, in addition to teaching the subject. Our students are, of course, not only organisers, but also participants in events both at home and abroad. They participate in academic conferences, Hungarian speech contests, oratorical competitions, storytelling or drama, so they use innovation methods.
