Abstract:
The process of mastering the commutative and associative properties of multiplication has a dual character. On the one hand, the application of these two properties helps the decision-making process and the application of an appropriate rational variation for transformation and calculation of numerical expressions, for solving mathematical and practical problems and for finding unknown number in equations. On the other hand, the application of different variations for calculation assists the deliberate mastering of these properties.

This paper presents the author’s variation for teaching the commutative and associative properties of multiplication in primary school as well as different possibilities for their application in mathematics education.

Teaching 8-9-year-old students the commutative and associative properties of multiplication sets the beginning of developing their mathematical thinking and the formation of knowledge and skills that will construct the foundation necessary for their further education in secondary school level.
