Abstract:
The article analyzes the effectiveness of the use оf video materials in foreign language lessons for mastering foreign communication.

The purpose of the study is to identify the advantages of video materials and experimentally test the effectiveness of their use in foreign language classes.

The relevance of the study is due to the fact that today the use of multimedia technology including video materials in foreign language lessons is aimed at the formation of a foreign communicative competence that is the main purpose of teaching a foreign language.

In the process of the research the following methods were used: pedagogical experiment, pedagogical observation, testing, quantitative method, statistical method, questioning.

The research revealed the features of working with video materials, including the possibility of acting on different organs of human senses, developing critical thinking, stimulating the cognitive process, carrying out interaction with the student, adapting to the student’s requests, individualizing the learning process. In addition, the article outlines the pedagogical principles that must be observed when working with video materials (brevity, thematic connection with the lesson, the presence of exercises based on the video fragment, the principle “from simple to complex”, psychologically comfortable atmosphere).

The study includes an experiment on the use of themed videos in the structure of digital educational resource "Linguistic and country studies of the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand". During the experiment, different types of assignments were developed; a survey among students was conducted. The experiment showed that working with video materials creates conditions for the development of several types of speech activity: listening, speaking (monologue and dialogical speech), and writing.

In the absence of a natural language environment the use of video materials allows to create conditions as close as possible to real speech communication in a foreign language. It improves the quality of assimilation of knowledge in classes in a foreign language, allows students to give a visual representation of life, traditions, linguistic realities of the countries of the studied language and develops motivation and the speech activity of students. The use of video materials broadens the horizons, and also fosters aesthetic taste among students. It is an unconventional way of organizing training through active methods of action aimed at implementing a personality-oriented approach.
