Abstract:
Reuse of historical buildings in many different activities is an important global trend as dealing with these monuments must be carefully made so as not to lose their specificity and relevance. Egyptian universities include many historical buildings, which have historical and cultural value. Most of those buildings are not used. Some buildings that have been reused in some universities were handled in a way that lack adequate planning and studying. This resulted in the damage of these buildings and the loss of their historical value. In other cases the buildings were reused based on scientific method yet they are limited cases. It is necessary to examine how to use those buildings especially that many colleges and universities suffer from a severe deficiency in creating learning spaces which affects the functioning of the educational process. From this standpoint, we are reusing those buildings already in solving the spaces problem in order to increase the efficiency of the educational process and raise awareness of cultural and societal value of historic buildings, And although there are many methods and recent studies on how to deal with historic buildings and how to use them, there are limited research studies that addresses this problem.
The aim of this study is to analyze the local experiences of reusing historical buildings in colleges and universities on educational activities and educational role in the development of the educational process, In addition to showing some negative experiences that affected some historic buildings that have been reused. The study methodology works directly to achieve that objective where the methodology is based on the analysis of historic buildings that have been reused and how modifications were applied to them to accommodate educational activities, as well as the impact of those buildings and discussing about the cons and pros of those experiences, while displaying some global studies conducted in some countries that proved to be effective and successful in this area. Keywords:
