Abstract:
Although a great emphasis had been given in representations’ effectiveness in learning of mathematics learning, little attention had been given in representations’ role in learning of statistics. Thus, the main aim of this study is to investigate the role of different mode of representations in statistics problem solving (SPS). Specifically, this study investigates the abilities of 6th grade primary school students in using representations (verbal, tabular, graphical and symbolic form) of basic statistical concepts and in moving from one representation to another successfully. 250 Greek students of the 6th grade took part in the research. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was applied for data analysis. Results revealed the differential effects of each form of representation on students’ performance. Representational flexibility was also found to vary across the kind of representation.
