Abstract:
This study examined the degree of SMS addiction among the students of Abu Dhabi University and the impact of this addiction on their academic achievement. This study also examined the influence of gender, sleeping hours and the interference of family on the relationship between SMS addiction and their success in the university. The study followed the quantitative approach by using questionnaire in order to identify ADU students' degree of addiction and its impact on their academic achievement. The study sample consisted of (700) students from three colleges. Means, frequencies, percentage, and analysis of variance were used to examine the data.
This study discussed the differences among students in the degree of SMS addiction, as they were asked to identify the degree of using SMS. Also, they were asked to select one of three options for questions related to SMS addiction.
The main important result of the study was that the students had a high degree of addiction as they used to send SMS in different times, as all of the students’ responses had a mean score above the study theoretical mean (3.00). In addition, the study revealed that the students’ addiction was related to some variables such as GPA, age, college, and level.
In the light of the findings of this study, recommendations have been made for better understanding of SMS addiction and an indication given of possible future research studies.
