Abstract:
In more recent times, using augmented reality (AR) technology as a pedagogical tool to support conventional education has increased rapidly. Educators have recognised that AR technology tools have great benefit in enhancing teaching and learning practices. The purpose of this study is to review the benefits of using AR tools in higher education. This paper is a systematic literature review of the beneficial impact of using AR as a pedological tool in higher education. It considers some factors such as specific databases (including EBSCO Host, ScienceDirect), publication year (between 2015–2020), learner type (adult) and educational level (higher education). This study contributes to the existing literature as it gives a comprehensive overview of the benefits of using AR in higher education. Out of 80 reviewed papers, only 21 were included in the final analysis. The findings of this review indicate that using AR applications in higher education has great benefits in teaching practices, which improves the quality of the teaching activities, thereby improving the pedagogical process. This improvement of the technical teaching process also has great benefits on learning practices, including an increase in students’ understanding and students’ motivation to learn, which can lead to increased students’ achievements. This review found several other benefits relating to AR usage, which is discussed in detail. Finally, the limitations are also identified together with suggestions for future research in AR.
