Abstract:
The main goal that the ‘Integral Medicine with the Buenaventura Family’ project purports is to design and develop a tool that facilitates joint work and curricular integration of the different subjects that comprise the first and second year studies of the Medicine degree. To execute this, we plan to use the cases and life circumstances of a multi-generational fictional family; the Buenaventura family. This fictional family, which is comprised of people of different ages, races, and health conditions, aims to promote the holistic view of a family to students and the conception of the person in their multi-faceted dimensions. All first and second year professors can use the cases they consider relevant for their subjects. To implement this, they must work in a coordinated manner with the team of professors so that the approach to a case is truly meaningful for the student (for example, if Alzheimer's disease in the grandmother is addressed in biochemistry, that same week in the Humanities, they can address the topics of dependence and the circumstances that the family will have to face, etc.). To work on the particular cases, each teacher must set the learning objectives (what do I want them to learn?), design the methodology (how are they going to learn?), propose the development of competences/skills (what competences/skills do they train with this activity?), raise questions of rethinking or ethics (what idea of the person, of the world, of life, of society, of medicine, of science do we want to transmit by presenting this case?), think about the evaluation (how will it be evaluated?).The project involves teachers of different subjects in the 1st and 2nd year, with eclectic profiles and fields (basic sciences, clinical subjects, languages, humanities, etc.). In the initial phase of the project approaches for assessment activities, designing training and the planning of research methodology are carried out. Latterly, in the second phase, these approaches are transferred to the classroom, whereby data is collected and information collated is analysed. Finally, as a team of professors, a group reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of the method will take place alongside decisions on improvements and modifications for the following year. In adition, we will analyze the student’s opinions and comments on the different surveys we have shared with them.
