Abstract:
This paper is a research based study that aims at improving the teacher's performance in the classroom. The researchers, whose majors are English and Science subjects, designed "Teacher's Self Evaluation Form" for each subject. This form is a four rating scale(excellent, very good, good, not satisfactory). It's divided into several categories and contains the successful practices that help the teachers performing effective classroom performance.
Teacher's self evaluation form improves the teacher's teaching skills by evaluating his performance continuously. This form reminds the teacher with the desired practices in the classroom. The teacher evaluates his performance by awarding himself a grade (excellent, very good, good, not satisfactory) for each teaching aspect. Examples of aspects that the teacher evaluates himself on are: preparation and readiness, personality, used language, teaching aids, effectiveness of teaching skills, evaluation approaches, students' involvement, achievement of objectives……etc.
A sample of English and Science subjects teachers were provided with "Teacher's Self Evaluation Form". Teachers were asked to self-evaluate their performance three times per week. Teachers didn't encounter any difficulty in making use of the form because they had only to put ticks in the suitable boxes of the form. Educational supervisors were advised not to have a look at the teachers' evaluation of their performance in order to prevent putting them in critical situations and to encourage the teachers to evaluate their performance frankly and transparently. Alternatively, educational supervisors were asked to follow up the usage of the form by asking the teachers about the advantages of the form and by asking the teachers to talk about the teaching aspects that they feel they have improved on. Teachers were encouraged to overcome their teaching weaknesses in the following periods. For example, with aspects in which a certain teacher got "not satisfactory" or "good" , the teacher should work hard to improve his performance in these aspects to get "excellent" or "very good". He can refer to the educational supervisors or senior teachers for guidance and suggestions for improving his performance in the teaching aspects that he’s not satisfied with.
Fruitful results were gained from making use of the forms. Results of the study showed that the targeted teachers' performance improved within a short period of time. The forms could also be used in different ways. Educational supervisors and senior teachers could conduct post-lesson discussions based on the teachers' self evaluation of his performance.
The study was presented for all the educational supervisors in our governorate. There was a recommendation of designing similar forms for all the subjects.
We are intending to talk about the effectiveness of the "Teacher's Self Evaluation Form" and to distribute the forms to the audience in order to give a thorough description of their usage. The presentation will also be demonstrated with effective examples that occurred with teachers.
