Abstract:
Dyslexia is a disorder that affects individuals’ learning. It presents itself as difficulty in reading and writing, it is often related to developmental problems with identifying different sounds in speech and how they are related to words and letters. Assistive technology (AT) is seen as a great tool to build individual strength and improve academic achievements among dyslexic pupils. However, a large proportion of the research in this area has developed applications for English speaking students or European languages, whereas there is a very limited number of studies relating to designing and developing tools to support Arab pupils with dyslexia. This paper carries out an intensive review of the key research which has been carried out in Arab countries, with the focus of Saudi Arabia. The review has found that Saudi Schools lack from dyslexia awareness as there is a small number of studies. This leads us to dig into this matter much more in details with the target of helping those pupils who suffer from dyslexia. This paper aims to develop the background required for a future interactive and adaptive AT intervention for increasing reading skill of dyslexic pupils in Saudi Arabia.
