Abstract:
Students in Higher Education Institutes need to have a high level of motivation to function successfully where they are expected to work independently. One serious component of extrinsic motivation is the teacher. As all educationalists have agreed, teachers play an essential role in motivating their own students. This will eventually affect the students' achievement and their overall academic success. Sometimes this aspect is totally forgotten by teachers as they start teaching and attempt to track the academic calendar. Considering all of these, the presenter has investigated students 'thoughts on their teachers' role in keeping them motivated during the classroom. These students are from different levels (foundation,1st year and 2nd year programmes) in higher education institutions. In the presentation, she will compare what is already there regarding teachers' roles in motivating their students in both theoretical and empirical research. Then, these findings will be related to students' responses regarding their desires/wishes on how they would like their teachers to play their critical role in motivating them during the teaching process. Similarities and differences in both research and students ideas will be highlighted. Participants will be allowed to discuss their own opinions and thoughts on the given issues. They will also be given the chance to discuss their views on students' ideas.
