Abstract:
This study introduces an innovative teaching activity using H5P interactive videos to enhance learning in a second-year Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer course at the University Center of Defense at the Naval Military School of Marín, aimed at mechanical engineering students. The activity focuses on the application of thermodynamic tables for steam, an important skill in thermodynamics. Students engage with interactive video modules that explain the use of these tables to calculate various thermodynamic states. H5P technology integrates quizzes and checkpoints within the videos, ensuring active engagement and immediate feedback on understanding.
Each module covers specific learning objectives, starting with the theoretical background needed to understand thermodynamic tables. Detailed demonstrations follow, showing how to use these tables to determine properties like enthalpy, entropy, and specific volume. A significant part of the videos is dedicated to teaching interpolation techniques essential for accurate property determination. Interactive questions embedded throughout the videos reinforce key concepts and allow students to assess their comprehension in real-time. This approach keeps students attentive and engaged, requiring active participation to progress through the material.
Preliminary student feedback suggests this method significantly enhances understanding and retention of thermodynamic concepts. The interactive nature of the videos clarifies complex processes, making them more accessible. Immediate feedback from quizzes helps quickly identify and correct misunderstandings.
The use of H5P interactive videos in teaching thermodynamics offers a promising educational innovation. They foster active learning and improve comprehension of essential engineering principles. This activity highlights the potential of interactive technology to transform traditional engineering education, making it more dynamic and effective.
