Abstract:
This study deals with one of the key topics among academic leaders from various higher education organizations. It is an attempt to identify the professional competencies required by 21st century professors from the perspective of the professors themselves. The preparation of a standard for the required professional competencies for university professors could be of great help in the development of universities and consequently of the educational environment, which will impact on students' learning outcomes and achievements in higher education.

There is no doubt that 21st century teaching and learning require a different perspective: teaching could happen in new ways and perhaps through new channels. Moreover, university professors could play other roles to facilitate learning and educate forthcoming learners with future skills. Because of that, this study tries to answer the question, "What are the professional competencies needed by 21st century professors?''. The most important influencers in higher education are inspiring and informed university professors, so it is important to take a close look at how we must train and support professors to be ready for their roles and responsibilities in the future.

The study aims to determine the skills and responsibilities required by faculty in the role of educators of the 21st century. It uses a descriptive analytical method. The sample (n=63) will be randomly selected from faculty members with different educational backgrounds and experiences working at King Khalid University. In order to achieve the goal of the study, data obtained from a review of the relevant literature will be analysed, followed by the dissemination of a questionnaire which will be designed, reviewed and applied electronically. A range of statistical methods, namely means, frequencies and standard deviation, percentages, t-tests, and ANOVA, will be used to analyse the questionnaire data: the results, which are still undergoing analysis, are expected to answer the research questions regarding the required professional competencies for 21st century professors in four domains: teaching, research, community service, and leadership competencies.

Based on the results, recommendations and suggestions will be provided.
