Abstract:
This work-in-progress research to practice is driven by the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources into residential applications, which has spurred significant interest in photovoltaic (PV) systems integrated with DC/DC converters. This paper examines the role of DC/DC converters in enhancing the performance and reliability of residential PV systems, with a focus on educational strategies for undergraduate electrical engineering curricula. DC/DC converters are pivotal in optimizing the energy extraction from PV modules, ensuring efficient power management, and facilitating the integration of renewable sources with existing home electrical systems. We present a comprehensive analysis of converter topologies, their operational principles, and their impact on the overall efficiency and stability of residential PV installations. In addition, this work discusses the pedagogical approaches that can be employed to incorporate these critical concepts into undergraduate courses. By linking theoretical fundamentals with hands-on laboratory experiences and simulation exercises, educators can better prepare students for challenges in renewable energy systems. The paper also provides guidelines for developing course modules and Simulink simulations that align with IEEE educational standards and best practices. Our findings demonstrate that integrating practical renewable energy system design into the curriculum not only enhances students’ technical competencies but also fosters innovative thinking for future energy challenges. The implications of this research extend to curriculum developers, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders committed to advancing sustainable energy education.
