IMPACT OF OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES ON TEACHER TRAINING: TUTORIAL VIDEOS FOR TEACHING MANIPULATIVE MATHEMATICS

Abstract:
This study presents a teaching innovation project entitled “Discovering Manipulative Mathematics through Tutorial Videos”, developed within the framework of Open Educational Resources (OER). The project addresses the need to enhance the initial training of Primary Education teachers in the pedagogical use of manipulative materials, promoting conceptual understanding through open, reusable, and accessible resources.
The main objective was to design, develop, and evaluate a repository of 22 accessible tutorial videos focused on manipulative mathematics. These resources, including subtitles and descriptions, were disseminated through an open online platform in order to support both pre-service and in-service teachers.
A descriptive quantitative methodology was adopted, based on a questionnaire consisting of closed-ended items, which enabled statistical analysis of the data. The sample comprised 206 third-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Primary Education degree, who were taking the course Teaching and Learning of Arithmetic.
The results indicate a highly positive perception of the resources: 96.6% of participants considered the videos useful or very useful, 83.5% highlighted the clarity of the explanations, and 81.1% reported improved support for the design of assessment activities. The overall mean rating was 4.63 out of 5. Additionally, the resources achieved notable dissemination, with over 400 views per video.
In conclusion, the project confirms the potential of audiovisual OER as an effective strategy for mathematics teacher education. Their open, accessible, and reusable nature facilitates knowledge transfer across diverse educational contexts, extending their impact beyond the university setting. The findings support the continuation and expansion of the resource repository, consolidating a line of innovation focused on the development and dissemination of high-quality open educational materials.Keywords:
