Abstract:
University education, specially regarding to engineering degrees, has been traditionally focused on the learning of technical contents insubjects, disciplines and tools to implement in problem solving, new designs and technical development from a practical point of view, many times leaving aside the effect of those actions on society and the environment where they are implemented.
On the other hand, the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become a powerful driver with increasing presence and visibility, so that there is an unquestionable convergence between the actions of the current students (future professionals) and the achievement of these SDGs.
University may have a fundamental role to achieve the compliance of the SDG through:
- Exemplary – University serves as a model for how to support, adopt and implement the SDGs in governance, management policies and university culture.
- Education and training of those current students, future responsible for implementing actions that will impact the SDGs achievement.
- Generation of knowledge and innovative ideas for the SDGs achievement.
However, there is still much work to be done in order to integrate and make visible the 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs in the current university curricula.
For this purpose, we have developed an educational innovation and improvement project aimed specifically to integrate and make visible the SDG Number 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) in a subject of the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València.
Throughout this project:
i) specific contents have been developed, applied and integrated in the traditional topics of this subject;
ii) it has been assessed the prior and subsequent knowledge and interest of the students about the SDG Number 6;
iii) valuable lessons have been learned to improve this first experience and to replicate it in other subjects of this degree and others, regarding also other SDGs directly or indirectly related to them.
The implementation of the project made the subject be followed with more interest by the students and their feedback was positive.Keywords:
