Abstract:
Flipping the classroom is a pedagogical approach where students are first required to study new course content outside of class by reading textbook chapters, journal articles, or completing a prepared assignment. In addition (or alternatively) students may be asked to view a video or digital module. Next, students attend class ready to apply what they have learned through the use of active learning strategies such as case studies, problem sets, or structured discussion. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, using a flipped classroom approach was appealing to instructors in many fields and comprehensive reviews of the literature have shown many positive benefits of this approach. However, with the recent increase in remote learning, being able to implement a flipped classroom has become a new topic of discussion. This paper will examine the issues that may arise from trying to implement the flipped classroom pedagogy when students are unable to meet in a face-to-face setting. Research on flipped classrooms both pre and post pandemic will be used as a guide to examine the benefits and pitfalls of such an approach in the remote online learning environment.
