Abstract:
How can unlearning (our practice) promote equity, deeper learning and engagement in the classroom? How can we re-envision the role of students and teachers in the classroom? How have the last couple of years changed our deeply held assumptions and beliefs? Teaching and learning need to evolve if we want to achieve a truly equitable learning environment. In this interactive presentation, you will hear about innovative practices and brainstorm ideas for next practices and how to prepare for the future of teaching and learning. You will hear about equity-based practices; students-driven learning that places student agency, voice, and choice at the heart of the teaching and learning process; and how this approach fosters deeper learning and engagement in the classroom. You will learn about work done by students as they become co-designers of their learning experience. At Beaver, we create a learning environment and teaching practices that encourage students to transfer and apply their knowledge and delve deep into their work to inquire, problem-solve, and design to affect the world around them. We will showcase some of the work students created as they design and innovate with a purpose. We invite you to join an important conversation on the evolving roles and practices that foster deeper learning through student-led inquiry in a non-linear learning environment. You will learn about student-led inquiry through student examples; elements and skills of our inquiry model; and how we reimagined the roles of students and teachers in the classroom, where students are collaborators and faculty are meddlers in the middle. If you think that the roles of students and teachers in the classroom need to evolve and that institutions need to reimagine the way they think of learning, then this session is for you.
