STUDENTS’ SELF CONCEPT, ATTITUDE AND ACHIEVEMENT IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA

Abstract:
This paper presents a study on secondary school students’ self concept, attitude and achievement in Social Studies in junior secondary schools in Southwestern Nigeria. The study sought to establish: the relationship between students’ self concept and their achievement in Social Studies; the relationship between students’ attitude and their achievement in Social Studies as well as the composite effects of students’ attitude and students’ self concept on their achievement in Social Studies. The study was a correlational type. The sample for this study consisted of eight hundred (800) students from J.S.S. 2 class that were selected using multi-stage sampling technique from three zones in southwestern Nigeria. Three research questions emanated from the study. Three instruments were constructed by the investigator for the study. These include: Students’ Self Concept Scale (SSCS), Students’ Attitudes and Characteristics Inventory Scale (SACIS) and Social Studies Achievement Test (SSAT). These instruments were validated before used with reliability coefficients of 0.78, 0.83 and 0.87 respectively. The data collected were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of the study were discussed. The conclusions as well as the recommendations were provided.
