LOCUS OF CONTROL AND STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of students’ locus of control on their achievement in Social Studies in Osun State, Nigeria. The sample of the study consisted of 120 Junior Secondary two students that were selected using multi-stage sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection included: Locus of Control Scale (LCS) and Social Studies Achievement Test (SSAT). The two instruments were validated before used. Three research hypotheses emanated. T-test and Chi-square statistical analyses were employed in data analysis. Results indicated that two of the hypotheses were significantly related while one indicated no significant relationship. Among others, it was recommended that students’ locus of control should be put into consideration when planning the school curriculum.
