Abstract:
Quality is the desire of people on any educational endeavour. Achieving quality however does not come without adequate planning, since planning precedes successful performance in any venture. This study therefore investigated implementation Quality of the new 9-year Basic Education Curriculum in two states in South West Nigeria using appropriate assessment aproach. Three hundred and fifty two and two hundred and sixty nine primary school teachers selected from all the Local Government Areas of Osun and Ogun States respectively were used for the study. Curriculum Implementation Questionnaire [CIQ] with estimated Cronbach alpha coefficient 0.7 was used to generate data for the study. Descriptive statistics (Crosstabulation and Chi-Square) was adopted to analyse the data. Significant variations were observed between the two states in the qualities of teachers available for curriculum implementation, teachers’ awareness of four newly introduced Subjects [Basic Science and Technology, Computer Studies, Civics and Life Skills] and availability of professional teachers to teach the subjects. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the Federal Government through Universal Basic Education Commission should revisit the curriculum implementation procedures. Availability of qualified personnel (teachers) should be ensured across the states before curriculum implementation exercise begins. Quality curriculum implementation can still be experienced if Provision of personnel and appropriate assessment strategies are given priority.
