Abstract:
The rapid and continuous change in global community has call for concern by all stakeholders in education industry to rise up to the global advancement so as to make education respond to the needs of students and the society. To realize this, training and development of staff in higher institutions of learning is highly imperative. This research study aims at investigating the effect of training and development programmes on the overall performance of members of academic staff in Lagos State higher institutions of learning. Attention was focused on five public higher institutions in Lagos State. A forty item structured questionnaire on the effect of training and development on employee performance was used to collect information from 200 lectures who were carefully and randomly selected across all the faculties and schools in the institutions under study. Four null hypotheses were formulated for this study. Simple percentage and Chi-square method were adopted in analyzing the data collected from the respondents. The finding of this study reveals that there exist a significant relationship between training fund and performance of members of academic staff. There is also a significant relationship between training and attitude to staff to work. In addition, a significant relationship exist between training and academic qualification of staff. There also exist a significant relationship between evaluation method and impact of training on academic staff in Lagos State higher institutions of learning.

To make education more responsive to the needs of the learners and the society, training fund must be effectively managed and efficiently distributed. Career development programme must be organized for staff in other to make them respond to the changing world and increase productivity. Management of higher institutions of learning must embark on regular evaluation of training and development programme attended by staff in order to determine the extent at which the training and development programmes have been put into effective use by recipient.
