Abstract:
Introduction:
The basic objective of "patient safety in dentistry" is to avoid, as far as possible, adverse or iatrogenic avoidable events (accidents, errors or complications) associated with medical care, in this case, dentistry. For that the Check-lists are used.
In dentistry it would be useful to apply the strictest international standards that evaluate medical care worldwide. Special emphasis is placed on improving the safety of patients in the clinical environment and the effectiveness and quality of care processes, since one of the advantages of using this system is that the document itself warns of errors made by the dentist in the execution of each procedure in the clinic.
To achieve this improvement, the mentoring program has also been used. Peer mentoring is a development technique that aims to facilitate the adaptation of new students (telemacs) in the university and the development of transversal competences in the students who assume the role of mentors It is a formal, group, peer, mixed (face-to-face and virtual) and voluntary mentoring program.
In this project we have continued with the project of the previous year in which the objective was the establishment of innovative teaching methodologies to improve the quality of attention to children's patients; only that this year has been applied to the adult patient, and also an adequate mentoring system has been developed to improve patient safety in the clinic. The student has been a fundamental part of this project, performing the quality control of the clinical procedures carried out in the course of “Clínica Odontológica Integrada”.
Objectives:
To study the improvements in the quality of the clinical care in the dental patient, facilitated through the students of the last courses who will act as mentors of their telematic partners, having repercussions in a greater security in the clinical attention.
Material and methods:
Didactic-clinical innovation units have been created, composed of professionals from the teaching and student sectors (mentors-telemacs) who have carried out quality control interventions and critical analysis of the methodology used for clinical care. in the “Clínica Odontológica Integrada” of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Validated questionnaires have been prepared (which have been implemented in all team members and students) and a pilot test in relation to their sensitivity and discriminant specificity.
Results:
All of the teachers involved, both in the integrated clinic and in the present project, have daily monitored the fulfillment of the development of our objectives with a total of 17 patient surveys. All the necessary data for the accomplishment of the following statistical tests have been compiled. The validation was carried out, obtaining a list of improvements to be implemented in the upcoming courses.
Conclusions:
The results of this project open the certainty that the improvement in the quality of dental care is clearly perceived by the patients who are treated in our dental clinic thanks to the Mentor system and the use of Check lists. The diagnosis and supervision of each of the steps in the dental clinic is essential for the loyalty of people who come for the search of oral health in our faculty. Keywords:
