Abstract:
Competency Based Education (CBE), while still relatively new in the world of online education, has had time to develop from its original starting point. Rasmussen College has had a team refining their CBE course development for the last three years, and has a system in place that is working like a well-oiled machine. The purpose of this abstract and virtual presentation is to share our knowledge and approach with the higher education community to discuss what has worked well, strategies for efficiency, and challenges we’ve faced along the way.

We currently have produce over 50 CBE courses in the past two years, and not only are we making the experience beneficial to our team members working on the course design and development, but in using authentic assessment as our base, we’re creating unique experiences for the students. Students are tasked with real-world assessments throughout the course and everything we build for the students, including interactive media, allows them to progress through the course on a “show what you know when you know it” basis.

This virtual presentation will discuss the role that our CBE developments have had on our staff—it’s been our highest profiled project with the College the past two years--the process by which we’ve managed successful CBE development, and the impact it is having on our student success.
