Abstract:
A teacher of quality is a practitioner of knowledge. Not only he or she spreads the knowledge, he or she also has to consistently practice things that have been taught to the students in his or her daily life. In addition, teachers need to uphold the professionalism of the career, and be perceptive in all efforts towards betterment of education. Hence, the quality of a teacher is very crucial in order to fulfil the noble aspiration of educational field. In Malaysian educational system, the quality standards of school teachers set by the Ministry of Education (MOE) has always been high, in order to ensure that the future generation of the country will be educated by the best group of teachers as role models. However, despite of all measures taken by MOE to improve the quality of local teachers, it is still being debated by some stakeholders of the education system such as policymakers, parents, and general public. This conceptual paper will highlight the issues and challenges faced by MOE in enhancing the professionalism of Malaysian teachers, and discuss the implication of each issue and challenge toward the teaching and learning process in the school environment.
