TOWARD A GOOD ACOUSTICAL DESIGN FOR MAXIMIZING THE TEACHING EXPERIENCE IN LECTURE HALLS

Buildings have different shapes and designs; specialized designers see that they fit the user’s needs and achieve a required function. They vary from residential, commercial, entertainment, educational, religious, cultural, medical or industrial functions. Each of these structures should fulfill its inhabitant’s needs and requirements. People expect to find all that makes their usage successful. As a standard process, the building design relies on teamwork that involves as many consults as the type of project needs with the architect.

Architects create the whole shape and buildings components, despite the users’ identification. They create the spaces upon the social and environmental necessary data. The result follows the standards in addition to the design concept concerning the whole building along with the urban design boundaries. The interior design remains a second step in the design process especially in some newly developed countries alongside with the particular consults that enhance the type of internal function.

Research-Problem:
Spaces are many, in today’s world full of specifications, where each space has a precise characteristic. One of the areas, which need teamwork, is a large lecture hall where architects should consult both the interior designers and the acoustical designers. Any deficiency in one of those requirements, acoustic or interior, will result in an architectural space full of defects and the inappropriate architectural design will affect the acoustical and the interior design functions. Then the users will find it hard to pursue their duties, as many problems will arise. These problems start with the incorrect interior arrangement due to the inner shape of the space, the correct material selection that leads to the lack of sound clearness, and the inappropriate verbal communication.

Research-Goal:
This research aims to define the steps and the design processes needed to reach a lecture hall design, involving the architect, acoustical designer and the interior designer. It is where users can easily perform in a functioning interior environment whilst maintaining an identity to space. The integration between the architectural design, the acoustical design, and the interior design to reach an appropriate interior space that fit its function became an important issue, especially in large lecture halls or auditoriums. The research should achieve specific guidelines that enable architects as well as the acoustical consultants to follow for an ideal interior physical environment of a large lecture hall.

Research-Methodology:
This research shall develop a theoretical and quantitative approach. A relevant case study will help reach an optimal guideline design. The sample in question is achieving the ideal sound level, based on data and fundamental equations under the acoustical consultation, all along with the appropriate materials in uses that show the dedicated interior layout, which reflects the architectural design concept within the social and the urban design.
