Abstract:
The contribution presents results of an extensive research with the aim to describe the use of teaching and learning resources by Czech lower-secondary school students. The term of learning and teaching resources then covers all textual resources used by students in both printed and digital forms. Our research is based on the sociocultural theory as well as on the theory of media education. The authors follow their own researches on use of teaching and learning recourses for instruction and also for home preparation.

The contribution focuses on written and oral home preparation. The main question asked is: “What kind of printed and digital teaching and learning resources do lower-secondary school students use during home preparation for instruction?” The aim of the research was do identify the recourses that students use for homework and also for revising subject matters outside the school environment. The questions connected to home preparation applied to the Czech language, English language and History classes. In-depth semi-structured interviews with twenty lower secondary school students were carried out for the research. The answers were recorded with an agreement of the respondents and afterwards they were transcribed word by word. Axial coding was used for the results interpretation. What follows from the research is that for oral preparation students prefer their own lecture notes as well as handouts prepared by their teacher. Another frequently used resource is a textbook which plays an important role when being absent from school, however it is not a very popular resource during home preparation. Workbooks were also used for revision and fixation of the subject matter. Written homework is usually based on the work with workbooks and handouts. As for digital media, students use the Internet websites and domain most often.
