Abstract:
Informed by the growing national concern regarding strengthening of educator preparedness for Foundation Phase teaching, this study explores a range of initiatives employed by six South African Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) in preparing educators to teach both Numeracy (Mathematics) and Science. A structured questionnaire comprising of open-ended questions was designed in line with research objectives for use in focus group discussions with the lecturers at six HEI’s that offer Foundation Phase programmes. The findings will offer curriculum planners and lecturers at institutions of higher learning opportunity to have a greater sensitivity to, a better understanding of their current programmes and to better-inform curriculum development for HEI’s that offer Foundation Phase training and those that will offer the course in the future, thus leading to higher and quality learning.
