Abstract:
To achieve a good analysis, one should not only limit the representation of the data and the observation of what they are trying to convey, but also cover data calculations and summaries of the important features and analysis of what they contain. The latter information is obtained from the measures of central tendency and variability, since its main objective is to describe the important features of this data set.
The incorporation of Information Technology and Communication in the teaching-learning process is essential in a quality education system. The models of e-learning can provide a high level of quality training while building permit teaching-learning environments, flexible and unrestricted space, distance or time. Furthermore, the application of ICT to the field of training makes changing a traditional educational paradigm. In this context developed in Dokeos, platform issues measures of central tendency and variability, as this issue is very important in the presentation of information and is an important part in the descriptive statistics. Dokeos platform was used because it is a suite of online learning based on open source software. From authoring to reports, it provides all the features that an application requires for online learning courses.
The goal was to adapt the themes of measures of central tendency and variability in the Statistics area at the FESC; an e-learning model in order to (a) optimize its contribution to the content, skills and competencies that students should possess, (b) Integreate statistical software in courses to highlight problems and applications to real contexts of concepts and methods, (c) develop interactive materials to facilitate updating and learning by experimentation, (d) use a continuous assessment model to guide and prepare students in their training, and (g) promote collaborative learning on-line by assigning projects and activities to be performed in workgroups.
With that, Information Technology allows us to afford the students a new concept of using modern statistics that indicates that it is not as important to memorize formulas or perform complex arithmetic by hand, but instead can concentrate on getting results more quickly using some form of technology (software, advanced calculators, specialized websites, etc). It gives practical meaning to the results through critical thinking. The important thing is to understand and interpret the results of the measures of center and measures of variability. It’s recommended to at least once perform manual calculations before using any type of technology, which will improve your understanding and thus one can better appreciate the results obtained from the technology.
