Abstract:
From the Office for Equal Opportunities between Men and Women of the University of the Balearic Islands a survey was addressed to the students of this university. The main objective was to obtain more gender-disaggregated data on this group. This information was not collected in other ways so far and it allows us to deepen our knowledge of the new profiles of college students from the use of gender indicators.
One of the objectives was the collection of data that would allow us to analyze socio-demographic indicators in the group of college students and find out if there are differences by gender in this area.
The empirical study is a cross-sectional research design with survey. It was carried out in the three college campuses of the Balearic Islands: Palma, Menorca and Ibiza.
We calculated the sample size needed for a confidence level of 95.5% and a probability of error of ± 3%, and the sample set in 1028 students. From these data colleges students were selected using incidental sampling in the classroom. Finally participated in the study 1109 students (389 men and 719 women). These students were by campuses as follows: 1030 students were enrolled in Palma, 35 students were enrolled in Menorca and 44 students were enrolled in Ibiza (they represent 92.9%, 3.2% and 4% respectively of the total sample).
Statistical analysis of data related to socio-demographic indicators show significant differences between men and women (college students of the University of Balearic Islands) in the following topics: catalan level, educational level of parents, expectations of employability and access to new technologies.
