Abstract:
An educational method of needing social implementation is necessary for the engineer education. Therefore, an education for innovation by collaboration with society began to be executed in Japan. In this education, students need to find social problems and build solutions. In this paper, social implementation project executed by the fourth grader of Kanazawa Technical College using Stone Paper is described. For the convenience of class management, the project which was executed was narrowed down to one theme without choosing a wide theme of society as a whole. Stone Paper is a paper-like product manufactured from calcium carbonate bonded with high-density polyethylene. The production of Stone Paper uses no water, acid and no bleach or optical brighteners. Moreover, because it doesn't use the tree at all, the environmental impact is good. However, although Stone Paper has characteristics such as water resistance and resistance to breakage, it is heavy and weak against heat, and because it has drawbacks such as it can not be printed with a general printer, it is not very popular. Since it is desired that the use of stone papers be promoted from the industry, the students proposed ideas for new items using Stone Paper by Project Based Learning (PBL). These projects were proceeded with the cooperation of the printing company engineers. Several new ideas were proposed by the students and many of them were well received by engineers. It was clear in these projects that students thought and motivated more deeply from the questionnaire results.
