Abstract:
A combination of problem-based learning and conventional lecture was employed to teach a unique cosmology course in an IT-enhanced classroom. The module entitled “The Universe” is the fourth and final content-based module of the Special Programme in Science, a premier academic programme under the Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore. Collaborative learning by way of problem solving in small groups during whole class lecture was realised in a specially designed seminar room furnished where students are seated in multimedia-connected clusters centrally managed by the lecturer’s station. Hands-on activities with demonstration and research equipments, use of computation and visualization software (e.g. MathematicaTM) and student presentation of lecture problems stimulate and ensue active learning. The setup and design, experience, challenges, peer review and feedback from students on our pedagogical approach are detailed in this talk.
