Abstract:
The paper deals with the activation techniques making the process of learning and using up-to-date vocabulary in speech more sufficiently. Media can be integrated into language lessons in a variety of ways by developing activities based on news programs, television shows and newspapers. This article will suggest a motivating way to teach speaking and writing with audio visual techniques, with examples of several lesson on teaching new vocabulary via watching the news on the BBC News and writing entries to website forums and essays on modern topics.

The methods applied to achieve the solution of the research problem are analysis of literature and experiments performed in classes of English with the students of the second year of studies at the Kazan Federal University. The research is based on the results achieved by students mastering English through watching news programs, shows and videos on https://m.youtube.com as well as the works of contemporary Russian and international researchers, teachers and lecturers on teaching students using effective techniques to increase advanced student’s vocabulary and improve their spoken skills. The examination on the course “The foreign language (English)” involves the task where students are to give a review of the newspaper article and after being exposed to plenty of practice in class watching the BBC news and practicing the vocabulary the greater part of students showed the better results. From 30 students 26 passed this examination task with 15 points from maximum 20.

The authors conclude that videos in class are beneficial for both parties, students and teachers. Teaching English through media permits teachers to design lessons in their own unique way braking the rules of old-fashioned English classes making them more interactive, trendy and thus more motivating for students. Moreover, all those videos from YouTube can bring authentic content to the classroom.

Being motivated by news programs, television shows and newspapers, students show better results at mastering pronunciation, comprehension of words in English, speaking and writing. Students of the second years of studies were involved into the experiment. The paper might be of interest for schoolteachers and University lectures interested in varying methods in teaching English.
