Abstract:
We report on our experience in software engineering education within the framework of the computing curriculum in the College of Computer and Information Sciences of King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. The Master of Science degree in Software Engineering in King Saud University is designed for software engineers who want to expand their knowledge and experience in developing and modifying large, complex software systems. It emphasizes technical and management aspects of the software engineering processes. The program offers experience from both academic and industrial perspectives. Through challenging curricula, innovative courses, and a technical emphasis, students learn and apply knowledge, tools, and techniques in a real-world project environment. The program aims to produce industry leaders and researchers who are technically astute and possess advanced managerial, leadership, and communication skills. Individuals completing this program will be able to lead and improve the software industry and the state of the practice in years to come. The program contributes to the diversification and strengthening of the Saudi economy, as will be measured by job creation, and new industry development and growth in GDP per capita. The program was launched in September of 2012 and two batches of graduate students have enrolled in this program.

Some general issues are discussed, and an example of the course delivery strategies and linking them to real contexts in industry are presented. Insights from faculty, students, and administrators are presented along with reflections of the authors on their experiences in design, delivery and assessment of outcomes for this program.
