Abstract:
The new Law of Georgia on Higher Education, adopted in December 2004, created a legal basis for reforms, defining the roles and responsibilities of all players involved in higher education, the levels of higher education, rules for admission, licensing and accreditation procedures, types of educational institutions, introduction of credits, etc. Several changes and amendments to the law enacted in the last years reflect the dynamic process of reforms in the field of higher education. All of the main principles set out in the legislation have been implemented so far.

By 2006, the necessity of implementating already existing Law on Higher Education of Georgia on the one hand, and the need of implementating full coverage of European and global advantages of medical education together with international commitments to reform the system of medical education on the other hand, have put the medical community to face the objective challenges.

The health care system with the old regulatory and financial mechanisms was poorly manageable. Accordingly, the traditional forms of training of qualified medical professionals required innovative changes. A three-stage system of higher education (baccalaureate, magistracy and doctorate) called for coordination with the process of post-graduate education. All this would make it possible to implement harmoniously the “life-long learning principles”, although it’s clear that the creation of such a continuum requires appropriate material and human resources.

All the aforementioned have caused a lot of changes in different directions: curricula have been modified, new teaching methodology has been implemented, the standard has been adopted. Although a lot more should be done Akaki Tsereteli State University is one of the best Georgian institutions having adopted all the regulations and providing quality medical education and implementing new teaching methodology to make the teaching process successful.
