Abstract:
Interactive multimedia environment has been used for more than two decades in teaching information technologies. For that reason its essence and functions, as well as the semiotic resources it uses, have been argued in the present article. Its efficiency has been proven.
The possibility to construct an adaptive multimedia environment that corresponds to specific learning styles would be the next stage to attract the focus of our attention.

The following methods have been used to achieve this goal:
• the concepts learning style and cognitive style have been analyzed;
• the psychological levels, relevant to a specific learning style,concerning different cognitive activities have been studied in detail;
• an emphasis has been put on well-known types of learning styles;

The alternatives whether the multimedia environment should follow prevalent learning stylesor should it build them according to the characteristics of the educational course content have been discussed in conclusion.
